The Influence of Love and Culture: My Journey to Mastering Thai Cuisine

Cooking Thai food has been a passion that grew from personal connections and cultural exchanges. My journey began in high school in England, where I dated a Thai guy whose family introduced me to the rich flavors and techniques of Thai cuisine.

Years later, while living in Wisconsin, USA, I hosted a Thai exchange student named May, which deepened my understanding and appreciation of this vibrant culinary tradition.

As a recipe tester and recipe developer, I had the unique opportunity to experiment with and refine many Thai dishes, blending authentic tastes with my own creative touch. This post shares how love and culture shaped my love for Thai food and how it continues to inspire my work in catering and Thai food workshops.

How Love Sparked My Interest in Thai Food

My first real encounter with Thai food was through my high school boyfriend while we both lived in a student residency. His family lived in Thailand, yet each time they would visit, they welcomed me into their place in England and shared their favorite dishes, from spicy tom yum soup to fragrant green curry. Watching his Mom cook was like witnessing an art form. The balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors fascinated me. I learned that Thai cooking is not just about following recipes but about understanding ingredients, their history, culture and how they interact.

This early exposure gave me a foundation that I built on later. I started experimenting in my own kitchen, trying to recreate the dishes I loved. The experience taught me patience and attention to detail, qualities essential for any recipe tester or recipe developer. It also made me realize how food connects people and cultures in a meaningful way.

Deepening My Knowledge in Wisconsin

Years later, after finishing college, getting married and giving birth to my second daughter and while we lived in Wisconsin, I had the chance to host an exchange student from Thailand. This experience was a turning point. Living with someone who grew up immersed in Thai culture allowed me to learn about regional variations and family traditions that you don’t find in cookbooks. I also discovered how Thai food adapts to local ingredients without losing its essence.

During this time, I was already working as a recipe tester and recipe developer. I began testing various Thai recipes, tweaking them to suit different tastes while keeping them authentic. This hands-on work helped me understand the science behind cooking techniques and ingredient substitutions. It also prepared me to share my knowledge through catering events and Thai food workshops.

Bringing Thai Food to New Places

My passion for Thai cuisine eventually led me to organize Thai food workshops in places like Lisbon, Sintra, and Cascais. These workshops allow me to share the flavors and stories behind each dish with food lovers eager to learn. Teaching others how to prepare Thai food is incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about recipes but about passing on a cultural experience.

Catering has also become a significant part of my work. Whether it’s a small family gathering or a tad larger for corporate luncheons l, I enjoy creating menus that showcase the diversity of Thai food. From spicy salads to rich curries, each dish tells a story. My background as a recipe tester and developer ensures that every meal is balanced and delicious.

What Thai Food Means to Me Today

Thai food is more than just a cuisine; it’s a connection to people and memories. It reminds me of the kindness of my boyfriend’s family, the times spent in the kitchen with my exchange Thai student, and the joy of sharing meals with family, friends an those i end up meeting through my culinary practices. Every time I cook or teach, I feel part of a larger community that values tradition and creativity.

For anyone interested in exploring Thai food, I recommend starting with simple dishes and focusing on fresh ingredients. Joining a Thai food workshop can be a great way to learn hands-on techniques and meet others who share your passion.
